In a new comparative study Lucía Peixto-Pino et.al. compared the quality of chest compressions with the "LoCoMan" (low-cost-manikin) vs. a standard manikin.
Access to CPR training should be universal and independent of age, location, financial means, or access to qualified instructors.
In a recently published study in the “European Journal of Pediatrics” Lucía Peixto-Pino, Santiago Martínez Isasi, Martín Otero Agra, Tina van Duijn, Javier Rico-Díaz, Antonio Rodriguez Núñez and Roberto Barcala Furelos assessed the quality of chest compressions with the LoCoMan (low-cost-manikin) versus a standard CPR manikin. They conducted a quasi-experimental study with 193 schoolchildren in the age of 10 to 12 years.

A LoCoMan-group of kids was taught CPR via an integrative approach (sicence combined with physical education). These kids built their own manikin and practised with it. A control group practised in a traditional setting with a commercial manikin.
The results of the study show that the use of LoCoMan in this age group leads to comparable CPR skills as when commercial manikins are used.
Building of and training with the LoCoMan is very suitable for interdisciplinary teaching. Furthermore an earlier study has also shown, that working with the LoCoMan leads to additional people (e.g. family members) becoming involved with CPR. Unlike commercial manikins, the LoCoMan can be taken home.
